Christine Guillot Ryan to Exhibit at the Cultural Arts Center

Screen Shot 2014-08-27 at 1.09.52 PM

“Perception is reality, and I am fascinated how people gather fragments of what they decide is true and important– memory, stories, cultural influences, experiences, ideas and beliefs– and shape them into personal world views. I take fragments of the external world and weave them with invention and paint to create new morphing realities,” states OAL member Christine Guillot Ryan of her upcoming exhibition.

‘Converging Boundaries’ will be exhibited in the Cultural Arts Center Main Hall Gallery from September 5 through October 4, 2014.

Don’t miss the Opening Reception of ‘Converging Boundaries’ from 5:30- 8:30 pm on September 5th.

Guillot Ryan’s latest mixed media works explore the nature of our boundaries, the relationship between the intangible and the material world. Weaving fragments of representational imagery with paint, Christine creates new worlds that are vivid and richly layered, inviting imagination and provoking conceptual discovery.

Christine exhibits locally and nationally, is a member of the Ohio Art League and CAW (Creative Arts of Women), Art and Artists of 614, mentors students at Fort Hayes, and teaches workshops at the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center of Worthington and at the Cultural Arts Center. HWD: Regional Juried Sculpture Competition at Rosewood Gallery

The City of Kettering and Rosewood Gallery are pleased to announce the opening of HWD: Regional Juried Sculpture Competition. This year, 48 sculpture artists from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky submitted 130 pieces, from which the juror chose 30 artworks, representing 27 artists.

The exhibit runs from August 25 through September 26, with an opening reception on Sunday, August 24 from 2-4 pm. United Art and Education Awards will be presented at  3 pm that afternoon.

Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

HWD juror Carrie Longley describes how the exquisite nature in which the artists captured dimensions and surface made the jurying process a difficult one:

“I am consistently impressed by the innovation, variety, and incredible skill sets of the HWD artists. The exceptional entries this year made the jurying process an inspiring challenge. […]  As a viewer, I’m drawn to works which feature unique combinations of the familiar and imagined. With much of the work, the use of familiar materials or repurposed objects such as wood, steel, ceramics, even shag carpet initially captured my attention, while the imagined aspects encouraged me to further investigate, admire, and wonder.”

Art as Contemporary Folklore at the Acock Gallery

Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 3.34.34 PM
The exhibition “Art as Contemporary Folklore” is an exploration of art historical precedents and their relationships to the present.
Ohio Art League artist Maria DiFranco investigates these interrelationships through her etchings, paintings, and graphite drawings. Her work contains depictions of the contemporary experience as seen through the eyes of this Ohio Artist. Inspired by the work of Francisco Goya, DiFranco also cloaks her account of contemporary society in symbolism.
“At as Contemporary Folklore” is on display through August 30 at the Acock Gallery of CCAD in Downtown Columbus.

A Trip Back in Time and A One Man Art Show with Daniel Rosales

“A one-man show of an artist’s work is a severe test and often a very revealing one.”

This is the opening statement to a “Palette & Brush” column in the Columbus Art League’s newsletter circa 1930s regarding solo artist Guy Brown Wiser. Wiser’s appreciation for craftsmanship and attention to detail earned him a solo exhibition in an era not accustomed to one-man shows.

As many of you know, the Ohio Art League strives to represent and encourage our members, be it in a one-artist exhibition or that in a group. Thus, in the days of the Columbus Art League, single-artist exhibitions were not as prominent as they are now in our Member Curated Exhibitions that are hosted monthly.

OAL member artist and photographer Daniel Rosales is an example of the progression our Ohio-based organization has seen over the years. Join him in his first ever solo show, “Play With Your Food,” at MadLab Theatre downtown at the end of this month.

The Opening Reception for “Play With Your Food” takes place from 5- 7 pm at MadLab.

This show is the idea of showing food in a manner that’s reserved to people. It gives a unique take on human personality. It is for anyone who has ever enjoyed playing with their food and now they don’t have to imagine what it would look like. To see how the inanimate would live if they could. -Rosales

His spectrum of genre ranges from that of the lively inanimate food stuffs, to that of professional event and interior photography. Have a look at his Facebook page to find out more about the event or get an inside look at some of his work.
