99th Annual Spring Juried Exhibition

The Ohio Art League presents member works as selected by Ron Pizzuti, internationally renowned art collector, at its 99th Annual Spring Juried Exhibition. Hosted by the Fort Hayes Shot Tower Gallery, the exhibition includes 80 works by 53 Ohio artists, selected from a total of 247 works by 130 artists.  A variety of media is represented in the exhibition including photography, glass, ceramic, oils, acrylics, paper and digital video.

The Ohio Art League is privileged to welcome Ron Pizzuti as juror, whose selections yielded a compelling and creatively diverse exhibition. Pizzuti is an internationally recognized collector of contemporary art, recognized by ArtNews as one of the “World’s 200 Top Collectors” for the past several years. He currently serves as a member of the Drawing Committee of the Whitney Museum of American Art and is a trustee of the Wexner Center Foundation. Ron was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Columbus College of Art and Design, and is a past trustee of SITE Santa Fe Contemporary Art Museum, past chairman of the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission and Trustee Emeritus of the Columbus Museum of Art and the Columbus Symphony.

The Ohio Art League presents two major juried exhibitions annually. These exhibitions are major cultural events in Ohio, and allow Ohio artists to showcase their work in highly visible and prestigious settings. Members of the Ohio Art League are eligible to submit two works of art in any media for consideration in each of the annual juried exhibitions.

“Locomotion” by Larissa Mellor

By Tom Hubbard

Curator Nicole Langille

“I have been observing Larissa Mellor’s work throughout our tenure in the Masters of Fine Arts program at The Ohio State University.

I asked to curate an exhibition of her work because the compelling personal imagery, references to literature, and formal elements drew me into a unique world that is as quiet and subtle as it is complex and turbulent.  Her work is a delicate in both the process of making and viewing, and I felt it would be appreciated by a viewing public.””

Artist Larissa Mellor

Larissa Mellor was sitting on the floor of her studio in the former Porteous department store in Portland Maine. It was 2004. Her studies at the Maine College of Art were almost over.

Her studio did not have windows. “I had a nice Chicago style window last year. They were great for letting in the light but I spent too much time looking out the window,” she said.

She was sorting through left over art materials, glass and tracing paper, wondering which of these materials would she use in her career. “I liked the way they came together and I’ve been working with these materials since then.” she said. She finished her MFA in painting at The Ohio State University College of the Arts last year.

Larissa drew often as a kid. She just didn’t give it up, but the Maine College of Art’s two-year foundation program allowed her to explore all media. For a major, she decided on painting. “It suited me best, and I thought I was pretty good at the time,” she said. It was also an open major that allowed freedom to explore.

She loves painting and, if she’s away from it for a couple of days, she says, “I can’t believe it.”

Personal and family history has influenced her. Her family was among the refugees from the former Yugoslavia and Rumania during World War II. Her grandmother told stories of being bombed by all sides in the war. “The bombs would drop and we would jump into the ditch,” her grandmother said. Such experiences may not be readily apparent in an artist’s work, but they are there. Larissa says, “I’ve been lucky, I have a supportive family.

“I’ve been working around similar concepts and themes for some time. I’m interested in shadows, they are ephemeral, like a tracing,” she says. Another influence is film. She is fascinated by the work of the Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. “I’ve seen some of his films about 50 times. Every time, there’s something new. His work and my work ask you to spend some time with it,” she says.

Her work has a similar unity to it. There are departures but she is always in it. “I do a lot of work the public never sees. It’s things that get made and thrown into boxes. It’s work to get to other work,” she says.

Larissa says, “My landscape pieces are a series of panels with small figures in a vast expanse. It gives you opportunities to examine how these figures are related to the environment.

The work in the show grew out of the previous work I was making.  I thought about Rorschach inkblots and combined the idea of those with imagery and processes I have been working with.  These will challenge viewers to renegotiate how they look at the world.”
